Deployment Analysis

No one modern system could be deployed without preliminary designing. Its aim is the estimation of technical realization of the project, its technical and economic parameters.

Within the framework of realization of the system for early detection of forest fires the DSC specialists developed methodology and a set of tools for projecting of Lesnoy Dozor configuration according to customers' needs. The common name of it is ForCAS (Forest Coverage Analysis System).

Obviously various configurations of forest fire monitoring system could have different price and detection characteristics. Besides, these characteristics depend not only on the system configuration but also on diverse external effects with which it co-exists. For example, mountain country sets strict limits on a field of view — up to the gaps in observation and for that reason a large quantity of cameras is needed in order to reach the same surveillance characteristics as in the flat country.

As for the Factors that Influence on the Characteristics of the System, the Following Ones Could be Marked out:

  • landscape conditions;
  • weather conditions;
  • size and form of forest;
  • existence or absence of nearby infrastructure;
  • possibility to use human resources.


By means of ForCAS it is possible on the base of customers requirements of various aspects (detection capability, usage of high-rise towers of some specific kind, price, etc.) to determine and adjust the planned system configuration to meet the goals.

The Input Data of ForCAS Are

  • Information about wooded areas including the marks concerning their danger for the nature and height.
  • Information concerning existing high-rise towers with their height and geographical coordinates.
  • Height map.
  • Regional weather statistics.
  • Classification reference books (forest theme).
  • Customers' requirements concerning detection accuracy and time to detect fire, coverage and price of the system.


The configuration variability even under the fixed requirements allow optimizing of different aspects of the system.

Typical ForCAS Tasks

  • Design the system with fixed detection requirements and minimum short and long term investment.
  • Design the system with fixed nonrecurring costs and maximum coverage area.
  • Design system with fixed non-recurring costs and maximum average detection capabilities.


With the help of ForCAS it is possible to conduct situation analysis of "what if" kind, which shows how the characteristics of the system'll be changed in case of alteration of the requirements or function conditions. Within the scope of such analysis opportunities of the system could be appraised as well as its "bottlenecks".

Typical Problems that Could be Solved in the Process of Situational Analysis

  • Evaluation when changing deployment costs and detection requirements (e.g. coverage requirements). It may happen, that under complicated relief conditions insufficient reduction of coverage requirements could sufficiently bring down the price of the system.
  • Estimation of the system parameters alteration while stepping up demands or lowering cost requirements of the system.
  • Appraisal of alterations of characteristics of the system when changing infrastructure functioning (presence of human resources, communication channels).


In this way (due to ForCAS) estimation of overview and particular characteristics of the system is possible as well as its correction if needed. Nowadays analogs of ForCAS in the world do not exist.
